MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island Police are investigating two fires, both of which appear to have been intentionally set. These took place in the early morning hours of Monday, December 12, 2005, in the Kona District. The first, which was reported at 2:16 a.m., was just off the Queen Kaahumanu Highway near the 88 mile marker, in the Makalawena area, and involved a vehicle fire and a small brush fire about 200 feet away from the vehicle. The fires were extinguished by the Hawaii Fire Department and the vehicle was totally destroyed.

At 2:42 a.m., the second fire was reported in the area south of Hualalai Road, between Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kuakini Highway. This fire caused the evacuation of the eastern most units of the Kama’aina Hale Apartment Complex. No structures or vehicles were damaged as a result of this fire. Hualalai Road between Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Kuakini Highway was closed from about 3:00 a.m. until 6:45 a.m. Hawaii Fire department units remained in the area continuing to extinguish hot spots.

Witnesses reported seeing three juveniles in the area of both fires, and a blue color vehicle in the area of the Makalawena fire.

Anyone with information in regards to these fires is asked to call the Kona Police at 326-4646, extension 253, or the non-emergency telephone number at 935-3311.
