MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police have arrested a 23-year-old Kona man for allegedly kidnapping his former girlfriend and forcing her to search parked cars for luggage and camera bags.

The 18-year-old victim reported that the suspect contacted her in the area of Hale Halewai Park on Saturday evening (March 26, 2005) and ordered her into his red Ford Explorer. The suspect then drove the female to Huggo’s parking lot and instructed her to lean out of the window and look for items in parked cars.

A Kona patrol officer noticed the suspicious behavior and stopped the suspect’s car on Kahakai Road. Police then learned that the suspect was using the victim to locate unattended items in parked cars. Officers also located a syringe that the suspect threw out of the window as he was being stopped.

The suspect is being held at the Kona police cellblock pending further investigation, and the case has been turned over to the West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Officer Ed Buyten of the Kona Patrol or Detective Nancy Haitsuka of the West Hawaii CIS at 326-4646.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300 in Hilo or 329-8181 in Kona. All Crime Stoppers information is kept strictly confidential.
