MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Kona Domestic Violence Unit officers have charged a 27-year-old Captain Cook man with attempted murder and a variety of other offenses stemming from an argument that occurred Monday (July 15, 2002) in which he shot at his girlfriend as she drove away in a car.

The suspect, identified as Duane Grace, is being held at the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $95,500 bail.

Grace was charged at 9:30 a.m. with attempted murder, first-degree reckless endangering, terroristic threatening, abuse of a family or household member, having an illegal place to keep a firearm, prohibited ownership of a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon, ownership of prohibited ammunition, having no permit to acquire a firearm, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, third-degree theft and second-degree criminal property damage.

Acting on a search warrant at Grace’s residence, police recovered the barrel of a sawed-off .22-caliber rifle. Later in the course of the investigation, police also recovered the rifle.

Grace gave himself up to police Tuesday at the Kealakehe station after he allegedly got into an argument with his girlfriend about 4:15 a.m. Monday in the rear parking lot of the Coconut Grove on Alii Drive and fired a gun at her as she drove away.

The woman, who was not injured, drove to the Kealakehe station and reported the incident to police.
