A 48-year-old Kona man died and two others were injured Wednesday night (May 23, 2001) after a head-on collision that occurred on Hinalani Street near the Manumele Street intersection in Kailua-Kona.

The victim was identified as David W. Adams, of a Kailua-Kona address.

Responding to a 9:40 p.m. call, police determined that the victim was heading mauka on Hinalani Street when his 1980 Mercedes Benz was involved in a head-on collision with a 1986 Nissan pickup truck driven by Ledward Lewi, 21, of Kalaoa.

The three persons involved in the crash were taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where Adams was pronounced dead at 10:25 p.m.

Lewi and his passenger, Douglas Belt Jr., 18, of Waikoloa, South Kohala, remain in guarded condition at the hospital.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing their investigation into the crash and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the collision. Lewi and his passenger were wearing seatbelts, and Adams was not believed to be wearing his.
