A Kona man has been charged with theft, criminal property damage and burglary after he gave himself up to police Sunday (August 8, 1999).

Mark Alan Coburn, 40, of Kailua-Kona, was charged Tuesday afternoon with two counts of second-degree theft, one count of first-degree property damage, one count of second-degree burglary and one count of trespassing.

Police recovered about $14,000 worth of property Coburn had taken.

The suspect told police that on January 11, 1999, he took tools valued at $10,140 from the Car Sharks shop in Kailua-Kona. On February 12, 1999, he allegedly set fire to a house in Leilani Estates in Puna, causing an estimated $50,000 to $60,000 in damage. And on March 22, 1999, he burglarized a garage in Holualoa, North Kona, taking garden tools valued at $3,979.

Coburn was freed pending further investigation on the criminal property damage charge. He was held on the other charges until he posted a $3,100 bail.
