MEDIA RELEASE

It took more than three hours for Kona police officers to break up an unruly mob of young people gathered at the access road to Kiholo Bay early Saturday (April 3, 1999).

Responding to a 12:37 a.m. call of a large gathering of youths drinking, littering and blocking the access road, officers arrived at the scene to find a crowd of more than 100 young adults and 75 vehicles gathered.

The crowd refused to obey commands to disperse, and it took five police officers until 3:10 a.m. to clear the area.

During the melee, officers arrested 15 youths for curfew violations and one youth for being a runaway. They also issued numerous traffic citations for a variety of violations, including littering.

The crowd left empty beer bottles, beer cans and other rubbish on and along the road when it finally dispersed.
