MEDIA RELEASE

A 57-year-old Kailua-Kona man was killed Wednesday night (December 6, 2000) when he was struck by a car on Alii Drive about 0.2 miles north of the 3-mile marker.

Responding to a 9:45 p.m. call, police determined that Frederick Konanui was crossing Alii Drive in a westerly direction when he was struck by a 1984 Chevrolet Corvette traveling north on Alii Drive.

Konanui was taken to the Kona community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:37 a.m. Thursday.

The driver of the car, John Carroll, 57, of Kailua-Kona, and his passenger, James McCandless, 29, of Kailua-Kona, were taken to the Kona hospital, where they were treated and released for minor injuries. Carroll was arrested for negligent homicide and released pending further investigation.

Speed was believed to be a factor in the accident.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and are continuing the investigation.

Wednesday’s death was the 36th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 28 at the same time last year.
