A 55-year-old man died Tuesday (October 7, 2003) of injuries he suffered when he was struck by a vehicle while walking along Alii Drive near Kahaluu Beach Park.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Responding to a 2:44 p.m. call Sunday (October 5, 2003), Kona patrol officers determined that an SUV driven by Robin Canda of Honaunau was traveling north when it swerved across the centerline and struck the victim on the shoulder of the southbound lane. The victim was taken to the Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing an investigation into the case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Tuesday’s death was the 25th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 19 at the same time last year.
