MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Police have identified a pedestrian killed Tuesday (September 9, 2003) when he was struck by a van on Queen Kaahumanu Highway (Route 19).

The victim was identified as Everett Joseph Grass, 36, of a Honokaa address. Police said Grass had recently moved to the Big Island from Alaska.

Responding to a 6:51 p.m. call Tuesday, Kona Patrol officers determined that a rented 2003 Chevrolet van driven south by William Carr, of Visalia, California, struck the pedestrian in the southbound lane about seven-tenths of a mile north of the Hualalai Resort in Kaupulehu, North Kona.

Grass’ death was the 22nd traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 18 at the same time last year.
