Report No. C08021387
Big Island police have charged a 27-year-old Waikoloa man with assault offenses in connection with a stabbing at Laupahoehoe Point on Sunday (July 13).
Jonathan F. Teo of Waikoloa was charged Monday afternoon (July 14) with first-degree assault.
He is being held at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $10,000 bail until his arraignment scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
The case was initially being investigated as an attempted murder. It was reclassified to a first-degree assault after detectives conducted further investigation.
At 12:12 a.m. Sunday, North Hilo Patrol officers responded to Laupahoehoe Point in response to reports of numerous people involved in an affray. Upon arrival, they located the 34-year old man with lacerations to his head and neck area. The victim was initially transported to Hilo Medical Center via Hawaii Fire Department Helicopter. He was released from the hospital Monday (July14).
The investigation revealed that prior to the stabbing, a verbal altercation took place between the two. At one point, Teo broke two beer bottles. During the physical altercation that ensued, the victim was struck and injured with the broken beer bottles. Both the victim and the defendant were at a graduation party.
Two other attendees at the party that night reported minor injuries while trying to quell the altercation. They were treated and released on Sunday morning.
