MEDIA RELEASE

Li’i, the Hilo Vice Section’s narcotic canine, will be featured on the government access cable television channel.

The county-sponsored program, “What’s Up in Hawaii County,” will show how the police use the black Labrador retriever and her keen sense of smell to sniff out hidden illegal drugs.

The two-year-old Li’i is trained to signal police officers whenever she smells marijuana, heroin, methamphetamine or cocaine. She is one of two trained narcotic canines belonging to the Hawaii County Police Department. The second dog works with the police in West Hawaii.

The half-hour program will be shown on cable television Channel 52 at 8 p.m. on Tuesday (July 9, 2002) and again at 8 p.m. on Thursday (July 11, 2002).
