MEDIA RELEASE

Police are advising motorists to be on the lookout for survey teams standing along major Big Island streets and highways from Wednesday, June 1, through mid-June, 2005.

The teams will be taking part in the state’s annual seat belt survey. Sponsored by the State Transportation Department, the survey will be conducted by the University of Hawaii’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning.

The survey involves stationing trained observation team members to monitor the use of seat belt use at various sites around the island.

During the observation, team members will park and stand on the side of the road to ensure continual traffic flow and safety. They have been instructed to wear safety vests and helmets and to exercise caution.

In conjunction with the survey, police are reminding motorists to buckle up before driving.
