MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police have seized a total of 4,920 marijuana plants ranging in height from seedlings to six feet as part of its continuing “Counter-Cannabis Field Operation.”

During the four-day operation that began Tuesday (April 4, 2000), officers seized plants in the Pahala area of Ka’u; the Orchidland, Waawaa, Nanawale, Leilani Estates, Hawaiian Beaches and Kapoho areas of Puna; the Honomu and Hakalau areas of South Hilo; the Waipunalei area of North Hilo; and the Paauilo area of Hamakua.

Joining Big Island police officers in the marijuana eradication enforcement effort were personnel from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the State Department of Conservation Resources Enforcement.

One incident was reported. On Tuesday, officers spotted a man in a marijuana patch in Hawaiian Beaches. The suspect managed to escape into the surrounding brush, however, before officers could apprehend him. An investigation into the case is continuing.
