…charged with drug offenses following a month-long "ice" investigation

A month-long methamphetamine trafficking investigation by Hawai’i Police Department vice officers was concluded Wednesday evening with the arrest of a 20-year-old North Hilo woman.        

Vice officers detained Rene Halstead in Honoka‘a and served a search warrant on her vehicle, leading to the recovery of approximately four ounces of crystal methamphetamine or “ice.” A subsequent search warrant executed at her Laupāhoehoe home resulted in the recovery of another 10 ounces of “ice,” one ounce of dry processed marijuana, and 100 Hydrocodone pills.

Throughout the course of this investigation, police recovered approximately 19 ounces of “ice” with a total street value of approximately $121,000. The investigation began on the west side of the Big Island. Focus eventually moved to the east side, leading to a joint effort between the Ice Task Forces from both Hilo and Kona. 

Halstead was charged with two counts of first-degree methamphetamine trafficking, one count of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, one count of second-degree promotion of harmful substance, two counts of third-degree promotion of harmful substance, one count of third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug and five counts of possession of drug paraphernalia. Her bail was set at $50,000. She is being held at the Hilo police cellblock pending her initial court appearance in South Hilo District Court scheduled for Monday (June 8).
