Media Release

Hawaii County police have charged one man with theft and are investigating a false reporting case against another in connection with the theft of a moped late Wednesday.

An 18-year-old Waikoloa man reported that he was at the Old Kona Airport sitting on his moped around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when a man struck him on the back of the head, causing him to fall off the moped. He said the suspect then gained control of the moped and drove away with it.

Police located the suspect, 20-year-old Jostin Santana, at his Kona home and arrested him for second-degree robbery.

Further investigation revealed that the victim had given false information about being hit on the head and that Santana actually had borrowed the moped and failed to return it. The case was reclassified and Santana was charged with second-degree theft. His bail was set at $1,000.

Meanwhile, police opened a false reporting investigation against the victim.
