Media Release

Big Island police are cautioning the public to be aware that moped thefts are on the rise, especially in West Hawaii.

To reduce the likelihood of theft, moped owners are advised to take the following precautions:

  1. Secure your moped to a stationary object. (Some of the stolen mopeds have been tossed into trucks.)
  2. Don’t leave your keys in the ignition.
  3. Be aware of high risk locations for parking your moped: underground parking lots, open garages, carports, and areas not visible to the public.
  4. Write down your VIN number and a complete description of your moped so you can assist police in locating it if it gets stolen.

For more information, call Sergeant William Souther at 326-4646, extension 245.
