A Big Island man died Saturday night (November 25, 2000) after his motorcycle ran off the road and struck an embankment on Mamalahoa Highway (Route 11) near the 98-mile marker in the Kaohe area of South Kona.
The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the victim was riding his 1997 Harley Davidson motorcycle south when he crossed the centerline, ran off the left shoulder of the road and struck an embankment. The victim, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained head injuries.
The victim was transported to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m.
Traffic Enforcement Unit Officers are continuing the investigation, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death,
This was the 33rd traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 28 at the same time last year.
