MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police issued a total of 172 seat belt, nine child restraint and 73 other citations and made three arrests for traffic violations at 18 seat belt enforcement projects over the July 4 holiday weekend.

During the same period, police made five arrests for drunk driving and two arrests for other traffic violations, and they issued 41 citations for traffic violations at 11 DUI checkpoints islandwide.

The seat belt enforcement efforts have been continued since the “Click It or Ticket” campaign designed to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities.

“There may have been a misconception that our enforcement efforts emphasized during the ‘Click it or Ticket’ campaign were over,” said Sergeant Randy Apele, head of the Traffic Services Section. “We’d like to remind the public that seat belt use and drunk driving enforcement are not campaigns for short periods of time. Police will continue to enforce seat belt and drunk driving laws year round.”

Apele said there have been 14 fatalities this year, compared to 16 for the same time last year. Of these 14 fatalities, three were DUI-related and three of the fatality victims had failed to use seat belts.
