A 52-year-old Pahoa man died Saturday (February 9) from injuries he sustained in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) and Kukui Camp Road in Mountain View.

Responding to a 5:03 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that a 26-year-old Mountain View man was operating a 1987 Ford pickup truck and stopped in the northbound lane to initiate a left turn onto Kukui Camp Road when he was rear-ended by the victim who was operating a 1986 Honda two-door sedan. 

Fire Rescue took the victim to Hilo Medical Center,where he died at 6:04 p.m. 

The driver of the Ford pickup truck was not injured.

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors in this crash. The driver of the Honda was not wearing his seatbelt. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the fifth traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with six at this time last year.
