MEDIA RELEASE

Puna patrol and community police officers have embarked on a two-day project to educate the public about new rules governing traffic patterns at the Keaau Elementary School.

In an effort to prevent motorists from blocking the highway, Route 139, the state and county have initiated new traffic regulations at the Puna school.

The new regulations were adopted after school authorities received numerous complaints that parents arriving early to pick up pupils at the school have been blocking traffic by parking on the state highway.

To warn motorists, the sidewalk fronting the school has been painted red, and “no parking” signs have been placed along the road.

In addition, motorists will no longer be allowed to use the access road or right turn lane leading to the school as a parking lot. Instead, parents are advised to arrive at the regular time to pick up their children and no longer arrive there early.

On Tuesday and Wednesday (January 20-21, 2004), police officers will be on hand to help educate the public about the new traffic rules.
