An 83-year-old North Kohala woman died Tuesday (November 15, 2005) from injuries she sustained in a motor vehicle/pedestrian collision on November 7, 2005 in North Kohala.

The victim was identified as Dolores Bartolome of Halaula, North Kohala.

Responding to an 8:50 p.m. call, North Kohala patrol officers determined that the victim was crossing in a westerly direction on Akoni Pule Highway in the area of the 24-Mile Marker when she was struck by a 1996 Nissan Quest van traveling north. The victim was not in a crosswalk.

The victim was transported by Fire Rescue personnel to the North Hawaii Community Hospital and later flown to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. The victim died at 2:50 a.m. this morning.

The driver of the Nissan van, a 48-year-old North Kohala woman was not injured.

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were involved.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 32nd traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared to 37 at the same time last year.
