MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are asking for the public’s help in the investigation of a fire that occurred last February in North Kohala.

At about 1:31 a.m. on February 22, 1999, police and fire units responded to a house fire on Hualua Road in Kahei, North Kohala.

The fire destroyed one room and the lanai of the two-story house, which was vacant at the time the police arrived. The rest of the home was heavily damaged by smoke.

A Fire Department inspector has determined that the fire started in an open lanai at the rear of the residence and spread inside. The inspector was unable to determine how the fire started, however, and police have received information that the blaze may have been set deliberately.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call North Kohala police at 889-6540.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 329-8181 in Kona or at 961-8300 in Hilo. The numbers are answered 24 hours a day. Callers will be given a coded number and their identity will remain anonymous. Callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 if their call leads to an arrest, indictment or the recovery of property. Crime Stoppers neither subscribes to “Caller ID,” nor does it record phone calls.
