MEDIA RELEASE

A 21-year-old North Kohala woman died Friday (June 10, 2005) of injuries she sustained in a one-car crash on Akoni Pule Highway (Route 270) near the 12-mile marker.

The victim was identified as Kristyl K. Sasaki of a Kapaau address.

Responding to a 6:25 a.m. call, North Kohala patrol officers determined that Sasaki was driving a 1992 Toyota two-door sedan north on Akoni Pule Highway when the car crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the road and overturned. The victim, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle.

It was not immediately known if speed or alcohol was involved in the crash. Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call Officer Marvin Troutman of the TEU at 326-4646, Ext. 229.

Friday’s death was the 16th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 20 at the same time last year.
