The Kona Crime Prevention Committee recognized Detective Sharlotte Bird as "Officer of the Month" for November in a luncheon ceremony Wednesday (November 3) at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Bird was honored for an investigation that led to the arrest of two adults and one juvenile suspected of committing crimes involving 22 victims across several districts in Hawai’i County.
After receiving a tip from the public, Bird identified two men and a teenage boy who were suspected of committing two robberies, a burglary, two assaults, eight motor vehicle thefts, seven thefts from vehicles, 13 thefts of property, two fraudulent uses of credit card, an identity theft and criminal property damage. The minor was also wanted for escaping from the Hawai’i Youth Correctional Facility on Oahu.
As a result of Bird’s investigation, all three were arrested. Forty-nine criminal cases—including 27 felonies—were referred to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney. Police recovered eight motor vehicles, four motorcycles and stolen personal property that was later returned to a victim on the mainland.
As "Officer of the Month," Bird is eligible to become "Officer of the Year."
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee is an organization that encourages community involvement in aiding and supporting police in West Hawai’i.
