Media Release

The Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaiʻi recognized Officer Lloyd Ishikawa on Thursday (December 22) as “Officer of the Month” for December. This is the second time this year he was named “Officer of the Month.”

The Puna patrol officer, who works primarily as a warrant officer, was honored for four his proactive work in four cases during the month of October.

The most noteworthy involved a report of a stabbing in progress that Ishikawa heard on his way home after the conclusion of his shift. He immediately responded to assist other officers and learned that the suspect had fled the scene on foot. Ishikawa found footprints and used his tracking skills to locate the suspect.

Also in October, Ishikawa used his proactive instincts to determine that a vehicle in one case and a scooter in another had been stolen—even though their owners did not yet know they were missing.

In a third case, Ishikawa linked marijuana plants to a wanted fugitive who fled into the bushes when the officer arrived to arrest him. The fugitive was arrested and found to be in possession of 47 marijuana plants, 6.3 pound of dried marijuana, 4.8 grams of hashish and nine firearms—including two that had been stolen in a burglary.

Lieutenant Glenn Uehana, who nominated Ishikawa for the honor, said all the cases “were a direct result of his proactive efforts” that tied fugitives to their crimes. ” Uehana called Ishikawa “a highly effective protector of our community and a positive role model for fellow officers.”

As “Officer of the Month,” Ishikawa is eligible for “Officer of the Year.” He was named “Officer of the Year” for 2010 and “Officer of the Month” this past June.

The East Hawaiʻi “Officer of the Month” award is a project of the Aloha Exchange Club of Hilo.
