Media Release

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee recognized Officer Paul Mangus as "Officer of the Month" for May in a luncheon ceremony Wednesday (May 5) at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.

Mangus was honored for his performance as a School Resource Officer at Kealakehe Middle School and for arresting a 15-year-old boy who was in possession of 2.9 grams of crystal methamphetamine during a traffic stop.

Lieutenant Nancy Haitsuka nominated Mangus for the award. She said he not only teaches the DARE program but he also attends school dances and other school activities so he can establish a rapport with the students.

"Officer Mangus deserves to be recognized for his hard work for teaching youth the importance of remaining drug and alcohol free," Haitsuka said. "With officers like him, our youth are receiving the tools they need to have a brighter future."

As "Officer of the Month," Mangus is eligible to become "Officer of the Year."

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee is an organization that encourages community involvement in aiding and supporting police in West Hawai’i.
