The Kona Crime Prevention Committee recognized Officer John McCarron as “Officers of the Month” for July in a luncheon ceremony on Wednesday (July 6) at Huggo’s restaurant in Kailua-Kona.
McCarron was honored for what a supervising detective described as his “diligent and time consuming investigation” into a credit card theft from a resident of an elderly home facility. The man’s stolen credit card was used 43 times, during which the suspects removed $8,600 from various automated teller machines in the Kailua-Kona area.
Using video surveillance photographs and good police legwork, McCarron linked the fraudulent use of the credit card to a housekeeper at the elderly home and her husband. He arrested them both.
Detective Bradley Freitas nominated McCarron for the award. “Officer McCarron’s comprehensive investigation led to the successful arrest of two suspects responsible for these financial crimes against an elderly victim, of which one was formally charged on four felony offenses, and also the recovery of $2,650 dollars of the stolen monies,” Freitas wrote in nomination papers. “Through his actions and efforts, Officer McCarron has continued the preservation of the quality of life here in Hawaiʻi that we are accustomed to, while being guided by the core values, Mission and Vision Statements of the Hawaiʻi Police Department.”
As “Officer of the Month,” McCarron is eligible to become “Officer of the Year.”
The Kona Crime Prevention Committee is an organization that encourages community involvement in aiding and supporting police in West Hawaiʻi.
