The Kona Crime Prevention Committee recognized Community Police Officer Tyler Prokopec as “Officer of the Month” for May in a luncheon ceremony Wednesday (May 1) at Huggo’s restaurant in Kailua-Kona.

Prokopec was honored for his response to community complaints about a suspected drug house in the Seaview Circle subdivision.

After a meeting at which residents of the subdivision expressed their outrage about the suspected drug house, Prokopec researched the home and its residents. He then took his research to a Vice Section officer. The two investigated until they obtained enough evidence for a search warrant.

A team of Community Policing and Vice officers served the warrant on the house, where they arrested eight persons. The arrests led to 15 felony charges for drug and firearms offenses and additional misdemeanor and petty misdemeanor charges. Police also recovered assorted drugs, ammunition and drug paraphernalia.

Sergeant Floyd Richards, who nominated Prokopec for the award, praised him for making the community a safer place to live. “The Seaview Circle community was very grateful for the hard work that Officer Prokopec had accomplished,” Richards wrote in nomination papers.

The Kona Crime Prevention Committee is an organization that encourages community involvement in aiding and supporting police in West Hawaiʻi.
