Officers to ticket illegal dirt bikes and ATV’s 04-06-05

Big Island police are warning the public that officers will issue citations to anyone who is operating a dirt bike or all terrain vehicle (ATV) on any public road within the county.
This includes all state and county roads and roads in private subdivisions that are being used by motorists, said Sergeant Dexter Veriato, head of the Traffic Services Section.
“We have been receiving a lot of complaints about noise and speeding due to dirt bikes and ATV’s on public roads and in subdivisions,” Veriato said.
“The law requires officers to issue citations to anyone who is found operating these vehicles in an illegal manner. The law even allows police officers to impound dirt bikes and ATV’s that are being operated on public roads.”
Any vehicle being driven on a public road must have a valid weight tax, safety inspection sticker and no-fault insurance. Dirt bikes and ATV’s are not required to have them because they are intended for off-road use only.
“We are asking for the public’s cooperation in keeping our roads safe to avoid needless injuries,” Veriato said.
