MEDIA RELEASE

The Hawaii County Police Department has announced that because of traffic safety concerns, traffic patterns will change during the 2003 Merrie Monarch Festival.

From 1 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday (April 23, 2003) through Saturday (April 26, 2003), there will be one-way traffic only in the mauka direction on Kalanikoa Street from Kuawa to Piilani Streets.

Right turns only will be allowed for all entries to and exits from the Ho’olulu Complex on Kalanikoa, and right turns only will be allowed on Piilani Street from the Real Property Tax Office. At the intersection of Kalanikoa and Piilani Streets, left turns will be prohibited.

Regular two-way traffic will remain in effect on Manono, Kuawa and Piilani Streets.

Also during the Merrie Monarch Festival, public vending will be prohibited along Kalanikoa Street and other public roads next to the Edith Kanaka’ole Tennis Stadium. Vending will also be prohibited in the areas next to the Real Property Tax Office and other county buildings.

The restrictions were put into effect because of traffic safety and other health and safety problems that have arisen in recent years, the Police Department said.
