Opening of School Means Return of One-way Traffic Patterns 07-26-01

Police are reminding motorists that one-way traffic patterns on portions of Waianuenue Avenue and Kapiolani Street will go into effect early next month because Big Island schools are reopening for the fall semester.

Starting August 1, 2001, traffic on Waianuenue below Komohana Street will be one-way makai from 7:15 to 8 a.m. on school days. During the same hours, traffic along Kapiolani Street between Haili Street and Waianuenue will be one-way in the Puna Direction.

On Wednesday, August 1, 2001, the following schools will open: Waiakea Elementary, Waiakeaweaena, Hilo Union, Keaau Elementary, Mt. View Elementary and Hookena School.

Two schools — Kaumana School and Haaheo School — will open on the next day, Thursday, August 2, 2001.

The next Thursday, August 23, 2001, the following schools will open: Chiefess Kapiolani School, Ernest B. DeSilva School, Kalanianaole School, Keonepoko School, Pahoa Elementary, Honokaa Elementary, Waikoloa Elementary, Kohala Elementary, Kealakehe Elementary, Pahala Elementary and Naalehu Elementary.

The next day, Friday, August 24, 2001, Waimea Elementary School will open for classes.
