A 56-year-old Paauilo woman died Sunday night (July 1, 2001) of injuries she received in a two-car traffic collision on Wednesday (June 27, 2001) in South Kohala.
The victim, identified as Rita Jose, was flown to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu, where she died at 10:29 p.m. Sunday.
Responding to a 5:43 p.m. call Wednesday, South Kohala police reported that David Carse, 22, of Kailua-Kona, was driving a 2000 Honda Civic south on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 190) when his car crossed the centerline near the eight-mile marker and collided with Jose’s 1988 Honda Accord traveling north.
Carse was arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor, lane usage violation, having an open vessel, failure to have no-fault automobile insurance and three counts of negligent injury. He was released pending further investigation.
Police have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Sunday’s death was the 16th traffic fatality so far this year on the Big Island, compared to 20 at the same time last year.
