MEDIA RELEASE

A 61-year-old man was shot and wounded in his left leg while checking his farm in Ka’u Wednesday evening (November 7, 2001).

The victim was identified as Ruby Javar, of Pahala, Ka’u.

Responding to an 8 p.m. call of a shooting, police learned that at about 7 p.m. the victim and a friend, a 65-year-old male, were checking the farm, located above Pahala, because the victim had been having problems with unknown persons damaging property and stealing vegetables.

Javar’s companion heard a shot and found him wounded in the left leg. He took victim to Pahala Hospital, where he was treated for a shotgun wound. The victim was later transported to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was reported in stable but critical condition and was scheduled to be flown to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for surgery.

Police have initiated an assault and reckless endangering investigation. No suspects have been identified yet in the case, and Kona Criminal Investigation Section detectives are continuing the investigation.
