MEDIA RELEASE

A 40-year-old woman was killed Friday (April 16, 2005) in a two-vehicle collision on the Keaau-Pahoa Highway (Route 130) about 550 feet south of the Shower Drive intersection.

The victim was identified as Renee Kane, of Pahoa, Puna.

Responding to an 11:11 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that Kane was driving her GMC pickup truck south on the highway when her vehicle crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a ford four-door sedan traveling in the opposite direction.

Kane was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m.

The driver and three passengers in the Ford sedan were taken to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment. The male driver and a female juvenile passenger were admitted to the hospital in stable condition. An 11-year-old male passenger was flown to Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu in critical condition. The third passenger, a female juvenile, was treated and released for minor injuries.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers are continuing the investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Reed Mahuna of the TEU at 961-8889 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Friday’s death was the 12th traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 17 at the same time last year.
