MEDIA RELEASE

A 57-year-old man died Thursday (August 18, 2005) of injuries he suffered in a two-vehicle collision on the Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19) fronting the Alae Cemetery.

The victim was identified as Judy (cq) P. Gamiao, of a Pepeekeo address.

Responding to an 8:08 a.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that a 1990 Toyota pickup truck was traveling south when it crossed the centerline and collided with a 1994 Mazda pickup truck driven by Gamaio in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Toyota, a 25-year-old Hilo man, was taken to the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition.

Gamiao and his passenger, a 15-year-old boy, were also taken to the hospital. The boy was treated and released with minor injuries. Gamiao later died and was pronounced dead at 10:25 a.m.

Only the driver of the Toyota was not wearing his seatbelt.

It could not immediately be determined if speed or alcohol was involved in the crash.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a standard negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine exact cause of death.

Thursday’s death was the 22nd traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 25 at the same time last year.
