MEDIA RELEASE

Police have charged 22-year-old Neil U. Ranan in connection with a stabbing Friday afternoon on the Keaau-Pahoa Highway near the Orchidland Subdivision.

Ranan, a Pepeekeo resident, was charged with second degree attempted murder, second degree assault, first degree burglary, two counts of first degree terroristic threatening, two counts of second degree terroristic threatening, two counts of kidnapping and one count each of violation of order and first degree robbery. His bail was set at $750,000.

He was arrested after Puna patrol officers responded to a reported stabbing on Route 130 (the Keaau-Pahoa Highway) shortly after 1 p.m. on Friday (May 19, 2006). Upon their arrival, officers found a 49-year-old woman with an apparent stab wound to the abdomen. Witnesses at the scene had already subdued the suspect and were detaining him until police arrived. One of the individuals who intervened received a knife wound as well, but refused medical treatment at the scene. He later went to Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

The initial stabbing victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center by fire/rescue personnel and underwent emergency surgery for her injuries. She is listed in stable condition.

The attempted murder and assault charges stem from the incident on the Keaau-Pahoa Highway. The remaining offenses are related to a series of events at a family member’s nearby home just before the stabbing.

Ranan remains in custody at the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of bail pending his initial court appearance.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Detective Uwao Chartrand at (808)961-2382 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
