MEDIA RELEASE

Police are advising Big Island residents who may find explosives to leave them alone and immediately call the Hawaii County Police Department.

“If you find an explosive device, do not move it, do not touch it and call the police immediately,” a police spokesman said.

The police, in turn, will contact a U.S. Army Explosive Ordinance Detachment to dispose of the explosives, he said.

Police issued the advisory after a Hilo resident found what he believed to be a live hand grenade in his house on Monday (March 31, 2003) and brought it to the Hilo police station to have it disposed of.

Police immediately secured the area around the person’s vehicle and called the military, which determined the device was indeed a live hand grenade. The military removed the item from the police parking lot and disposed of it.
