MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police conducted a vigorous speed, drunk driving and seat belt enforcement project on Thursday through Sunday (August 14-17, 2003).

The project, which concentrated in the Kona, Hilo and Puna districts, resulted in 121 citations for failure to use seat belts and three citations for failure to use a child restraint on children four years old or younger.

The effort also resulted in 86 charges for other traffic violations and 13 arrests for traffic offenses or outstanding warrants.

In addition, officers made 14 arrests of juveniles for underage drinking, found one juvenile runaway and arrested two adults for drunk driving.

Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section said the effort has resulted in the investigation of two vehicle safety inspection stations for allegedly issuing improper safety stickers.

“The police will continue to conduct these traffic enforcement projects throughout the year, and not only on holidays,” Apele said.
