MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE
Kona police have charged a 35-year-old homeless man with second-degree felony criminal property damage for slashing at least 40 tires in the Kailua Village area.
The suspect was identified as Adonis Onandasan, of no permanent address.
Onandasan is currently being held at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center in lieu of $2,000 bail, and he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Monday (December 20, 2004) in Kona District Court.
Onandasan was arrested last Monday (December 13, 2004) after he allegedly slashed the tires of at least 24 motorists, causing an estimated $3,188 in damage. West Hawaii Criminal Investigation Section detectives charged him with the vandalism offense at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.
The vehicles with damaged tires were parked in the Lanihau and Kona Coast Shopping Centers, on Alii Drive near Huggo’s restaurant, in the area of Hanama Place near the county offices and on Henry Street near the Crossroads Professional Center.
As of Thursday, police said they were still getting calls from motorists who reported damage to their tires.
