Big Island Police Chief Lawrence K. Mahuna is advising residents that the Hawaii County Police Department is not affiliated with a non-profit organization called the Law Enforcement Officers Association of Hawaii (LEOAH), which is seeking donations from the public.

According to LEOAH leaders, the group was formed to raise public awareness about the danger of crystal methamphetamine, Mahuna said.

“While this is an admirable objective, to my knowledge, LEOAH is not associated with any current or former members of any law enforcement agency within the state,” he said.

Mahuna said the president of LEOAH, Kenneth Brandt, indicated that the group has the endorsement of Lieutenant Governor Duke Aiona regarding educating people about crystal methamphetamine and its effects.

Mahuna issued the advisory in response to questions from the public.
