The ninth annual Hawaii Police Commemorative Fund Tournament will be held May 14-16, 1999, at the Carvalho Park Complex in Hilo.
Sponsored by members, families and friends of the Hawaii County Police Department, the annual fund-raising event features four sporting events — the Kenneth K. Keliipio Softball Tournament, the Shige 5K Run and Walk, the Daison M. “Froggie” Morita Mixed Volleyball Tournament and a basketball tournament.
The softball tournament was named in honor of Officer Kenneth K. Keliipio, and the run and walk were named in honor of Officer Ronald Shigeru Jitchaku. Both were Hawaii County police officers who were killed while on duty. The mixed volleyball tournament was named in honor of Daison M. Morita, a state airport crash fire lieutenant who died in an automobile accident.
A portion of the proceeds from this event will go towards the construction of a memorial in memory of officers killed in the line of duty. Another portion will fund scholarships at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Hawaii Community College for students seeking a degree in the administration of justice.

Coordinators for the individual sports events and their phone numbers are:
- Five-kilometer run and 1.5-mile walk to be held at 7:30 a.m. on May 15 — Elroy Osorio Jr., 966-5835. For those who sign up later than May 12, 1999, the entry fee will be $20.
- Basketball — Randy Apele, 961-2213. The entry fee is $150 per team.
- Softball — Keoni Rodrigues, 961-2213. The entry fee is $150 per team.
- Mixed volleyball tournament — Tammy Victorine, 961-3107. The entry fee is $50 per team.
A concession will be available from Saturday morning until Sunday evening. The public is welcome to attend and participate.
