MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police served a total of 44 warrants on 38 individuals during a three-day sweep of South Hilo this week.

The sweep was carried out on Tuesday (October 10, 2000) through Thursday.

The sweep, the second this year, was conducted to reduce a backlog of outstanding warrants on the Big Island. A similar sweep conducted on April 4-6, 2000, resulted in the serving of 57 warrants on 45 individuals.

Major David Kawauchi of Area I Field Operations said the Police Department intends to hold similar sweeps in the future to keep the backlog of outstanding warrants at a reduced level.

The Police Department is urging residents who know there is an outstanding warrant on them to turn themselves in to the nearest police station. Doing so will avoid being served a warrant at their residence or place of work.

Residents who want to find out if they are wanted on an outstanding warrant should call 961-8805 in Hilo or 326-4646 in Kona.
