MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police have issued a total of 1,045 speeding tickets so far this year as part of its crackdown on speeding motorists.

This represents an increase of 105 citations over the 940 speeding tickets issued during the same period last year.

Sergeant Dexter Veriato, head of the Traffic Services Section, said police will continue their increased number of speed checkpoints islandwide.

The crackdown on speeding is aimed at saving lives, he said.

He noted that of the 33 fatal accidents recorded last year 20 of them — or 61 percent — were attributed fully or partially to speeding.

“As we announced at the first of the month, police officers are on the lookout for speeders,” Veriato said. “We hope this increased enforcement effort will cause motorists to think twice about speeding.”

Veriato offered this advice to motorists: “Since driving and road conditions vary from day to day depending on the weather and volume of traffic, motorists should plan ahead and adjust their driving habits to meet the changing conditions.

“The rule of thumb is, always plan on giving yourself enough time to get to your destination safely.”
