MEDIA RELEASE

Six persons were arrested for 11 liquor law offenses Thursday night (January 18, 2001) in a crackdown on underage and public drinking in Hilo.

A special crime reduction unit comprised of juvenile aid and community policing officers arrested five young adults from the ages of 18 through 20 on 10 counts of drinking offenses. In addition, the officers arrested one adult over the age of 21 for a drinking violation.

Officers assigned to the unit made the arrests during a sweep of the Banyan Drive area.

The sweep was part of an ongoing operation to apprehend potential underage drunk drivers before they get behind the wheel of a car.

Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section said that since the enforcement program began during the Christmas holidays, police have made 41 arrests of youths and young adults under the age of 21 for liquor law violations. The operations also resulted in three outstanding warrants being served and one runaway being located.

“We want to remind the public that juveniles and young adults under the age of 21 are prohibited from possessing any alcoholic beverages in public places,” Apele said. “We will continue to enforce laws against underage drinking throughout the year.”
