The Hawaii County Police Department has extended until the end of the month the recruitment period for men and women to act as volunteer disabled parking enforcement officers.

Volunteers will enforce disabled parking laws throughout South Hilo and Kona and be empowered to issue citations for vehicles illegally parked in disabled parking stalls.

Sergeant Randy K. Apele, head of the Traffic Services Section, said applicants must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Interested applicants will be subject to a screening process consisting of a character appraisal, background check and interview. Successful applicants will also undergo a short training course.

The recruitment period will continue through March 31, 2004. Applicant packets may be picked up at the Traffic Services Section at the Hilo police station, 349 Kapiolani Street, or the Kona police station in Kealakehe, or by calling the Traffic Services Section at 961-2305.
