MEDIA RELEASE

Big Island police are investigating a case in which a 10-year-old girl was severely abused.

Police learned of the abuse after the girl’s caretakers called fire rescue, which took her to the Hilo Medical Center on Monday, February 7, 2005. Noting the extent and nature of her injuries, hospital personnel then notified police.

The girl was flown to the Kapiolani Children’s Hospital in Honolulu, where she remains in critical condition suffering from festering head and body wounds.

Police said only that the girl’s mother had left the child in the care of a Puna couple.

Initiating an investigation, police have classified the case as endangering the welfare of a child and may bring other other possible charges. No one has been arrested or charged yet, and East Hawaii Criminal Juvenile Aid Section detectives are continuing their investigation.
