MEDIA RELEASE

Police are advising residents to be careful about throwing away personal or credit card information, especially in public places.

To guard against identity theft, police are advising residents to shred items of personal or credit card information before throwing them away, particularly in public trash containers.

Police have received complaints from persons who have had their credit card numbers used by thieves who apparently retrieved the information from public trash bins.

Thieves can gain access to such information by going through trash and retrieving items such as discarded pre-approved credit card offers that had been received in the mail.
