MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

An investigation has revealed that the circumstances of a shooting reported July 3, 2001, in a Ka’u subdivision was the result of a domestic dispute and not of a confrontation with armed intruders as originally reported to police.

Police have identified a 75-year-old female family member as the person involved in the dispute with a 55-year-old man who was shot at his residence in Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.

Police have recovered a handgun believed to have been involved in the shooting. The handgun has been sent to crime laboratories for ballistic examination and other forensic analysis.

Upon completion of the investigation, police will refer the reports to the Hawaii County Prosecutor’s Office for its review and disposition.

On the evening of July 3, 2001, KaÆu police and paramedics responding to a call from the residence had found the man suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim originally told police he had entered his residence and surprised two male intruders. He alleged that during a confrontation, one of the intruders shot him in upper abdomen.

The victim was flown by air ambulance to the Kona Community Hospital and later to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for treatment of his wound. He is still confined at Queen’s.
