MEDIA RELEASE

Police are reminding Big Island motorists they must yield the right-of-way to emergency vehicles using a siren or flashing lights.

According to Section 24-174 of the County Code, “The driver of every other vehicle shall yield the right-of-way and shall immediately drive to a position parallel to, and as close as possible to, the nearest edge or curb of the roadway lawfully available and clear of any intersection and shall stop and remain in such position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, except when otherwise directed by a police officer.”

Sergeant Randy Apele, head of the Traffic Service Section said police have received complaints from rural districts that traffic not stopped for emergency vehicles.

“The law is clear,” Apele said. “Whenever a police car, fire truck or ambulance approaches with a siren going or light flashing, you must pull over to the side of the road to let it pass.”
