MEDIA RELEASE

Because of increasing reports of violations, Big Island police are reminding Puna motorists that use of the shoulder lane on the Keaau-Pahoa Road (Route 130) is limited.

The shoulder lane is open to traffic from 6 to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday. During those hours, the speed limit is 45 miles an hour. The lane is closed at all other times and on state holidays.

The shoulder lane is for use by drivers heading toward Keaau to relieve traffic congestion during weekday morning rush hours. It’s also illegal to use the lane for passing.

Sergeant Randy Apele of the Traffic Services Section said: “The success of using this lane to relieve traffic congestion depends entirely on the cooperation of motorists, and we continue to urge drivers to use the lane safely and properly.”
